“Always be ready to make your defence to anyone who demands from you an account of the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence.”
-1 Peter 3:15-16
When you think of religion, what comes to your mind? Maybe you imagine a specific church building, community of people, or what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus. On the opposite side, maybe you imagine brokenness, arguments, and confusion when it comes to the topic of religion.
Religion was never intended to be something that complicated our view of who God is and what our relationship with Jesus is supposed to look like. Too often, we rely on the ways in which the news, social media, and even those close to us portray religion. We are often let down and need the reminder of looking to Jesus. Being a Christian is not about judgment, being better than someone else or earning your way to salvation. Becoming a Christian is a life long process that involves developing a relationship with Jesus Christ. We are called to show His love and grace to those around us because He first loved us. In moments of discussion about religion, why do we spend our time trying to prove that we are right? Instead, shouldn’t we be working to show God’s love to those who may not know?
Often in our journey of living out a Christ centered calling, we loose discipline in the fundamentals. I know this to be true because I am guilty of this myself! We are called to continually reflect on who we are, the beliefs we have, and how we may be presenting those to others around us. Be encouraged that no one is perfect in this journey of faith in Christ, but continually seeking after Him is key!
It is so easy to forget that you may be the only reflection of Jesus that someone sees.
